Muddiest Point Week 4

When we were discussing the pros and cons of Apple vs. Microsoft, you said Apple computers were more resistant to computer viruses.  You mentioned that Microsoft claims that they are targeted more by hackers because they are a bigger company, and that is why their computers get more viruses.  Do you think this is true, or do you think Apple really does just have better virus protection software?

  2. It is likely a combination of both factors, but I think it is true that Microsoft is targeted more by hackers/crackers. When someone designs a malicious virus they're going for maximum impact and connectivity to enhance the virus's ability to spread. General numbers for market share usually show Apple with around 5-6% 0f the market, while Microsoft hovers around a whopping 85%, so targeting computers running Windows grossly amplifies the pool your virus can infect.
